Fun Fall Festivities

This coming weekend are two excellent events in New Smyrna Beach. You can fill a whole day enjoying this darling beach town and what it has to offer. 

Fall Sidewalk Sale! 

November 14 from 9am-5pm

  

Stroll up and down Flagler Avenue and treat yourself to pre-holiday sales.
A great deal can be said about the historic Flagler Avenue… but one visit is worth a thousand words. With some buildings being over 100 years old, you can stroll from the river to the ocean and take in some of the history that makes New Smyrna Beach so unique.

During the sidewalk sale,  New Smyrna Beach. Merchants will offer sidewalk sales in front of their seaside shops. And what fabulous things you can buy! Visit a fun restaurant, and stop in one of the taverns for a refreshing drink! Flagler Avenue is between the river and the ocean, so you can enjoy the water in many of the establishments.

Canal Street Cruise! From 4PM-8PM

Classic Car Show with East Coast Cruisers from 4:00pm until 8:00pm.  The city closes off the street to all vehicle traffic with the exception of the Classic Cars themselves. This is an awesome event for the whole family to enjoy, there is food, a D.J. and most of the merchants are open for business during the event.

Daytona Beach Bandshell

Things to do in the summer

Even though we have been exploring inside activities to escape the heat, a series around things to do in the summer would not be complete without talking about the Daytona Beach Bandshell.

Every Saturday from now till the middle of September Friends of the Bandshell host a Summer Concert Series: FREE concerts at – well – the Bandshell! It’s a Daytona Beach summer thing to do, and even in the heat it is great fun. On July 4, there is a huge display of fireworks, as well. 

The Bandshell, with seating of 4,000, opened with a bang on July 4, 1937 sharing front page with headlines of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance and a picture of the Dionne quintuplets. A record crowd of 25,000 was on hand in the city for motorcycle races on the beach, a baseball game in the ballpark, a parade on Beach Street, and the Bandshell Concert. The 48 foot by 114 foot natural coquina rock bandshell amphitheater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Whether you are visiting, here part or all of the year, the Daytona Beach Bandshell is a must see and experience. It is located on A1A, directly adjacent to the famous Daytona Beach Boardwalk, the clock tower, stores, restaurants, the Daytona Beach Pier, and of course the beach!

You can enter the Bandshell through Ocean Walk Village from A1A or the overpass from the Parking Garage. Seating is limited so be sure to bring a chair or blanket. It is against Florida Law to bring alcoholic beverages into the Bandshell. Chair rental is available.

Sunglow Pier

The Sunglow Pier is a large wooden structure that spans 915 out into the ocean. It used to be longer, but a 1984 storm destroyed the seaward end of the pier, and it was not rebuilt in its entirety. The Sunglow Pier is quite the landmark and offers a lot to local and out-of-town visitors.

Fishing

You can enjoy ocean fishing from the pier, daily from 6am-11pm. Rod and reel rentals, as well as bait, are available. It costs $1 to go out onto the seaward end of the pier and $7 if you want to fish. There are cleaning areas, and seats. Fish typically caught off the pier include whiting, pompano, flounder, and various sharks.

Fishing aside, from the ocean end of the pier, the view is spectacular – all the way from the Daytona Beach Pier to New Smyrna Beach on a clear day. 

Gift Shop

The gift shop is where you can rent fishing equipment, pay the pier fee, and delight in Florida souvenirs. If you catch the gift shop attendant on a good day, he will tell you all about the history of the pier, and of Daytona Beach! The shop is so rustic and charming, you might find yourself buying a Florida shot glass, or something else you don’t need, even though you live here.

Crabby Joe’s Deck and Grill

Smack-dab in the middle of the pier is Crabby Joe’s restaurant. It is open from 7am-10pm daily. It has a simple, rustic decor with an emphasis on the nautical. The pier and the ocean are the focus of the casual eatery with a view of the water from every seat. During cold weather, plastic window sheeting is pulled down. During warm weather, you can enjoy the ocean breezes wafting through the restaurant. Outside seating is also available.

The Calypso Bar churns out specialty drinks, fabulous Bloody Marys, plus anything you want. The menu focuses on Florida fare – fish, fish sandwich, shrimp, crab legs, etc. etc. The food is fresh, good, and affordable.

On Sundays, Crabby Joe’s offers an omelet bar. For a flat fee, a chef will make you a fresh omelet to order with any of the available fillings. The blue crab eggs Benedict are to die for – so definitely check it out for breakfast or brunch. Starting at 11am sharp, lunch is served.

Stairs lead from the start of the pier directly onto the beach. Make a day of it: frolic on the beach, come upstairs to eat and drink, and go back into the waves!
