The Casements in Ormond Beach

Things to do in the summer
In the spirit of finding fun, (mostly free) indoor events to escape the Florida heat!

To visit the Casements, we are venturing a little bit north to Ormond Beach. Whether you are relocating to coastal central Florida, already live here part of the year, all of the year, or are just visiting, Ormond offers fantastic options for dining and shopping, as well as miles of our famous beaches.

The Casements, named for the large hand-cut casement windows that adorn the mansion, has been beautifully restored to function as the Cultural Center for the City of Ormond Beach. Set on the shore of the Halifax River, and just two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, the late John D. Rockefeller's winter home is known as "The Jewel of Ormond Beach."

The Casements welcomes visitors Monday through Friday from 1-4 pm, and Saturday from 10:00am to 12pm. Tours are conducted on the hour. Come learn about the history of the mansion and grounds for free! Visit special displays including Boy Scouts of America historical memorabilia and a collection of Hungarian festival costumes and artifacts. The Casements also hosts numerous events throughout the year, including monthly movies under the stars, cooking classes, festivals, and more.

Monthly Gallery Exhibits:

Each month the Casements’ Gallery displays various local artists and photographers. The exhibits open with a free public reception on the First Friday of every month from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Please call The Casements (386) 676-3216 for information.

The Hub, as it is called for short, is a real treasure in our coastal community. It has created spaces for artist studios and offers many different art workshops and classes. Moreover, there are also fabulous events at the Hub. So while it is hot and humid, and outdoor activities may not quite as inviting, check out the Hub! It is easily accessed from all the Greater Daytona Beach Area cities.

The Hub officially opened on March 1, 2012.  Since then, they have welcomed 2,000 visitors who have stopped by to take tours, marvel at the transformation of the building from office space to studio space, linger to chat with the artists and buy art!

All 22 studio spaces are leased to 36 artists representing a multitude of mediums, from painters to ceramic artists, videographers to jewelers, fiber artists to sculptors, as well as a few non-visual artists - a writer, an architect, and a musician.  Wall space, also leased, contributes to the overall vibrancy of this cultural mecca.

Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art

For centuries, painters sat on dewy tree logs in meadows and art studio stools across Florida creating what has become the biggest collection of Florida art on display for the first time at the new Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art that just opened this February!

Over 400 works show long-gone buildings and serene scenes of the Florida landscape, capturing sunrises, birds in flight, and blossoming wildflowers. The works cover a 200-year span of Florida dating back to the 1700s.The entire collection is comprised of 2600 works of Florida art. It will take about 10 years to rotate all of it through the museum display.

In addition to a large gallery space including a mezzanine, which showcases the collection’s signature pieces, the innovative Museum includes 6 changing galleries ranging from 900 to 2,000 square feet: the Florida Weather Gallery, the Florida Communities Gallery, the Volusia County Gallery, and more. There are also conference and education rooms, a cafĂ© with outdoor seating and a gift shop.

The Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum is on the Museum of Arts and Sciences (MOAS) campus on Nova Road. Admission is $10.95 for adults, $8.95 for seniors and students. Hours are the same as those of MOAS: Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 11am-5pm. The first Tuesday of every month offers free admission.

The Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art is a true jewel in the Greater Daytona Beach Area. You can literally spend hours immersing yourself in beautiful art and Florida history. Whether you are visiting or live here permanently, this museum is not to be missed! More Info
