Shop Local - Sappho Chocolates

In recent years, quality chocolate has occupied a growing niche in the market. Meanwhile, there are so many artisan brands of chocolate that it can make your head spin to research them. Chocolate is now treated with the same discernment as say wine, attributing all manner of flavor characteristics to various types of chocolate: floral, citrussy, deep berry, etc. These nuances come, of course, from the quality and purity of ingredients as well as the process through which the chocolate is created.

It goes without saying that a great chocolate engages all the senses. It should look inviting, smell glorious, make an alluring sound when we snap it or bite into it, and feel luscious in the mouth. Very good chocolate is also going to cost more – a lot more – than for instance a Hershey bar.

To make a great chocolate you must take the time to do every step of the process correctly, right from the very beginning. Not only must the chocolate maker select great cocoa beans, but they must work with farmers who ensure that the beans are optimally fermented and dried. Once this is achieved, the cocoa beans must be cleaned, roasted, winnowed, ground, blended, and refined with the highest quality ingredients. All this takes time and attention to detail coupled with a commitment to do what's best for the chocolate every step of the way.

In comes Sappho Chocolates! Right here in our Daytona Beach area, we have a chocolatier who takes chocolate making very seriously. Kathryn Neel, who studied at Ecole Chocolat, and her partners Charlotte Lambert and Darlene Duncan are committed to producing the best tasting and purest fine chocolates available to the public while following the most socially and ecologically responsible sourcing of our chocolate products.

The results are simply stunning. Their beautiful truffles come in incredibly delicious flavors, including Kona coffee, vanilla, caramel, vanilla, Earl Grey (!), and Chambord. However, Sappho Chocolates is always researching and experimenting with new flavor combinations and ideas. Their chocolates contain only the very highest quality ingredients, no fillers, no artificial flavors, nothing but the best – and you can taste it!

Moreover, Sappho Chocolates procures their cocoa beans from growers who do not use child labor and child slavery.  Certified Fair Trade chocolate growers can assure that these chocolates were not made on the backs of little children. Something also to consider when you buy those M&Ms, Twix, Snickers, etc. One of the reasons those type of chocolate products are so affordable is that large corporations get their beans at extremely low prices – beans that were grown with slave labor.

A fun facet of Sappho Chocolates products is their sci-fi shaped confections! You can get a chocolate Dalek (Dr. Who – for you non-geeks), D&D 20-sided dice and swords, as well as Star Trek and Firefly items. Moreover, with 3-D printing, Sappho Chocolates can make a mold for their exquisite chocolate out of just about anything. Planning a big party and want an impressive center piece? Get it made from chocolate and beautifully airbrushed with colored cocoa butter! Then serve it to your guests for dessert!

Sappho Chocolates is already making a big splash in the Central Florida Area – most recently with their presence at Orlando’s Makers Faire. With their new kitchen now open, they are ready to explore different possibilities and expand their market.

Look them up! Indulge yourself and get some chocolate! With local pickup and delivery you don't even have shipping costs! Sappho's Facebook page

Lunch on the Farm

Farm to table events are becoming increasingly popular as awareness about our agriculture and food industry is rising.  More and more people are seeking out local, organic, sustainable produce from local farmers markets.

Outdoor farm-to-table experiences bring the freshness of fields and orchards directly to your table. Chefs procure bountiful ingredients from local farms and prepare simple but beautiful dishes for guests to savor while sitting near fields, orchards, and ranches where some of the ingredients were harvested. These special experiences not only deliver amazing meals in unforgettable settings, but also a chance to see and learn firsthand how farmers and ranchers make the most of organic, sustainable farming.

Lunch on the Farm

One such event is coming up on Sunday, February 21, 11AM at Tomazin Farm in New Smyrna Beach! Lunch on the Farm is an annual event hosted by the Port Orange Cooking and Wine meetup group.

Tomazin's Farm - a family owned, third generation Florida  farm. The Tomazins practice sustainable, organic agriculture and sell their produce at many markets, to restaurants, and to Florida Hospital.

Upon everyone's arrival on the farm on February 21, you can enjoy a refreshing beverage and a few farm-fresh munchies during introductions.

THEN Paul Tomazin, the so called “barefoot farmer” himself, will give you a tour of his farm, where the most amazing organic vegetables are grown. You may have the opportunity to pick and purchase some of that awesome produce directly at the farm.

After the tour, you will sit and enjoy a farm-fresh buffet-style lunch which the event organizer, Alicia and I, Janet, will have prepared for you! There will be lots of vegetarian options and refreshing drinks!

Lunch will be enjoyed al fresco - rain or shine (in the case of rain, we will be under cover)!

Event price is $25 for adults (children’s prices are available) and includes lunch, drinks, farm tour, and the unforgettable experience.

To purchase tickets, click HERE.  Seating is limited and the event fills up fast – so hurry!
Lunch and drinks are included in the price. If you wish to purchase produce, please bring cash.

The Jewel of New Smyrna Beach

In rain or shine and during all seasons, the New Smyrna Beach Farmer’s Market is a constant in our community. Run by the farmers and vendors, this market is a fount of locally produced foods and goods. Grab yourself a cup of locally roasted coffee and go for a stroll through this tiny, but mighty market.

If you think organic produce is too expensive, you will find this is not the case at the New Smyrna Farmer’s Market. While shopping at the Green Flamingo stand or the Barefoot Farmer, you can purchase seasonal, local, organic fruits and vegetables, herbs, eggs, milk, honey, and more, for surprisingly little money.

Knowing your food was just picked that day, in your area, and by the person selling it to you is worth so much more than you pay. Packed full of vitamins and minerals from good soil, Florida sun, and complete absence of chemicals and genetic alterations, you get whole food at its best, right around the corner!

The market doesn’t stop there, though. Many local artisans make everything from unique purses, stunningly beautiful wooden cutting boards, homemade jams, pickled eggs, knitted garments, jewelry, gourmet sauces and spreads, raw/vegan delicacies, alpaca wool, cheese made from raw milk, art, and on and on!

Your friends and family will love receiving one-of-a kind gifts made by local people who appreciate your business.

Keep it local, shop organic, enjoy this jewel of a market every Saturday from 7am – 12:30pm, located between Old Fort Park and City Hall on Sam Avenue in New Smyrna Beach. Bring your dog!
